Perhaps the best example of this schism is the very nature of today's modern GOP. When "the other guy" incited an insurrection before millions of television viewers, members of the GOP immediately began to move closer to Trump rather than distance themselves from him and his seditious mob. Instead, Right Wingers, in cahoots with Right Wing Media perpetuated the second biggest lie of the century by alleging the insurrection was due to Antifa or only those opposed to Trump. Nothing could be further from the truth, but what can one expect from a political party unable to reconcile its own faltering vision for America from its own complete capitulation to genuflecting at the knees of that "other guy." Despite voting to convict 57-43, the Constitution requires a 2/3rds majority in order to formally convict. Instead of publicizing that the Senate had a simple majority to convict, Right Wing Media (as well as well meaning newspapers) published headlines indicating Trump was "Exonerated", "Found Not Guilty" and was acquitted with a vote of 57-43. Except that is not true. 57 voted to convict, not to acquit. And this subtle difference is how modern media accentuate the misinformation and manipulation of the modern American electorate - one they know and appreciate average Americans are too unintelligent to know the difference. Hence the Fox News strategy - misguiding viewers will always prove profitable to Fox News itself with repeated viewership but also increased ideological divisions - the entire point of their divisive broadcasts. If this seems too close to the Kremlin's Playbook, look no further - it is directly out of Putin's book to destroy America from within (Soviet Leader Khrushchev once said "America will be defeated without firing a single shot).
Now we have that very same GOP gleefully assembling later this week for their annual Conservative Political Action Committee Convention (CPAC). One thing that stands out with this assembly, is their key note speaker will be showcasing, yep, you guessed it - "the Other Guy." Seems losing the House, Senate and White House and the popular electoral vote by over 7 million is not enough for the GOP to wean from the gravitational force known as Trump. And this is about all we need to know about today's modern GOP. They would rather tie themselves to a man who incited an insurrection against America, lied incessantly as President (over 33,000 times) and as it will be shown soon, used loopholes and fraud to get out of paying millions in Federal income taxes. Sounds real patriotic, right? Instead of coming up with solutions for the myriad of problems facing our nation, the GOP has decided to look backwards instead of forward and to shape their policies not on basic principles of freedom, but instead on the crass notions of maintaining political power at any cost - including those that negatively affect our very liberty and democracy.
Just take a look at Texas this past week. De-regulated and proud, Texas found itself seeking relief through Federal largess (socialism) in order to handle the devastation relating to winter storms that wreaked havoc in the Lone Star State. Instead of taking responsibility, GOP politicians and supporting media immediately blamed the "Green New Deal" for Texas' failures. This would be funny if it was not so sad knowing the Green New Deal does not yet exist. It is merely a position paper on how to handle the Climate change crisis. I mean, is it "normal" for Texas to be shrouded in snow and freezing temperatures? When all is said and done, the failure of Texas Republicans to protect their citizens instead of their monied oil and gas interests will prove their undoing.
This week Merrick Garland is finally getting a confirmation hearing - not for SCOTUS but for Attorney General. What's the first thing one notices during this hearing? Efforts to tie the future AG's hands if and when something "political arises." Except Garland has made it perfectly clear that the DOJ works for the American People, and not the president. Sounds great right? Tell that to Ted Cruz and Lindsay Graham that seem hellbent on limiting Garland's authority because "Obama "politicized" the Justice Department. Huh? While giving a pass to Bill Barr and Trump, these ideological hypocrites claim Obama had a "politicized" DOJ? What should trouble them more is the fact Garland has made it a priority to find out not only who was involved in the Capitol insurrection, but also those that funded and encouraged it from behind the scenes. That alone should make the Republicans very nervous.
The bottom line is obvious. The GOP no longer maintains any principles about governing policies. They only want to cling to political power without actually providing real leadership. Why else would they be so hell bent to introduce bills throughout the Nation limiting early voting? Not to win on the merits of their policies, but to cheat until they can win again. As Harry S. Truman once famously said of the GOP; "If you can't convince them, confuse them." Have a safe week!
