As predicted, Robert Mueller's testimony before the House Intelligence Committee and Judiciary Committee proved to be a waste of time. Not from the standpoint that Mueller clearly established Tump's guilt for Obstruction of Justice, or that over 125 meetings were held between Trump Campaign officials and Russians actively seeking to undermine our 2016 elections, but from the standpoint of Trump supporting media and the entire GOP (the one dissenter, Rep. Justin Amash has left the GOP). So why did Mueller's testimony fall flat according to Trumplings? "He was boring." "He sounded like a feeble old man." "He didn't say anything new." And so on... Except stating Mueller had "nothing new to say" means that one has to accept his findings in his 400 plus page report as factual and to now say "he offered nothing new." The Report itself is damaging to Trump on coordinating efforts with the Russians - who unlawfully hacked DNC emails and then promoted misinformation via social media - in support of the GOP and Trump.
When it comes to boring, they really meant he might have been better had he used makeup or got an "orange" tan from a machine like the president does. To claim he was boring while ignoring the actual facts relayed is like saying "I never read a book written by an ugly author!" When did Americans become a nation of reality show believers? Many must have, because they cannot discern the physical appearance of a witness from the facts they are relating. And so it goes. Mueller's testimony fell flat not only because he was relaying a tale of "Immoral, unethical and unpatriotic" actions with the Russians but also a concerted effort by Trump to cover up his misdeeds. When Mueller warned about continued efforts by Russia and others to attack our elections, the GOP and Trump continued to attack the sworn facts as a "Hoax" not needing further election scrutiny. Perhaps because they not only have taken money from the Russians for their campaigns (Illegally) but also because they fully expect the Russians to help them win again in 2020! Either way, America is being attacked and the GOP and the president (and their supporters) don't really care (unless they can deflect and blame democrats, then they are all over it!). This delusional strategy was on full display by the GOP at the Mueller hearings by discrediting the origins of the investigation that occurred well before Mueller was appointed and claiming it all started with the Democrats seeking "dirt" on Trump (except it was John McCain that initiated the opposition research on Trump, not the Clintons or the DNC). Facts? Who needs facts when the president has so many hypnotized by his rhetoric?
Now people are up in arms because the Conservative majority on the Supreme Court has ruled that Trump can move money from the Defense budget to build (some of) his Border Wall. Unlike others that are upset about this precedent, I am not and I will tell you why. Presidents have for quite some time possessed authority to move money around that had been authorized by Congress - it's called the Reconciliation process. As long as the Executive has the money, he/she can spend it any way they think necessary - as long as they provide a full accounting to Congress. So the ruling really has less impact - at first blush. But it really does have muscle behind it - as it now will serve as a valuable precedent from the High Court that future presidents may allocate moneys previously blocked by Congress for climate change mitigation, health care initiatives or student loan relief or even amnesty program funding to DREAMERs. Why? Because if the president is now allowed to bypass Congress that puts limits on spending by taking money from one agency to fill the needs of another via presidential order, than the Conservatives will be very upset when that same precedent is used in ways they object to. Watch them in the future with their "hair on fire" when a future president acts the very same way "their guy did." One thing we can all agree on - from debt ceiling and deficit spending fights, the GOP sure has a ton of hypocrisy smeared all over their faces.
Until we wrestle the tyrannical grip of the GOP from the reigns of control in our government, we must fight to restore our Constitutional system of Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances. As influential political philosopher Montesquieu once wrote, "The deterioration of a government begins almost always by the decay of its principles. " Clearly, Trump, his supporters and the GOP have lost all of their principles - beyond putting Party over Country. Have a great week!
