Within the past thirty minutes, the GOP Senate Minority used the antiquated Senate Filibuster procedure to kill an effort to establish a Bi-Partisan Independent Jan. 6 Commission to get to the bottom of the root causes, including discovering and disclosing those involved in that effort to overturn the November 2020 election and to install Donald Trump as President for life. I know, saying "for life" may be hyperbole, but so was saying some Trump supporters are domestic terrorists six months ago. See how much can change? Can anyone erase the images of Trump inciting his supporters to come to DC on January 6 to cause mayhem to "Stop the Steal?" Can anyone forget the images of Trump saying "Go to the Capitol" and "I'll be with you" while he sat back and enjoyed images on multiple screens of his supporters actually engaging in the very "combat" Rudy Giuliani was demanding? How many inside the government were involved in aiding and abetting this effort to overturn our elections and democracy by violent measures? According to the GOP, there is "nothing to see here" - which is exactly what criminals would say when presented with a search warrant. Why get to the bottom of the insurrection when doing so may imperil the GOP's electoral future? I mean, only the guilty would oppose an investigation if they know in advance such an inquiry would expose many of their members for complicit actions or outright direct involvement. America deserves far better than the GOP.
So what about this filibuster then? Does anyone in their right mind really think the filibuster was designed with the anticipation it could be used to thwart efforts to learn who may be responsible for attempting to overthrow our government? According to Senator Joe Manchin (D?), "Bi-Partisanship" is more important that preserving our democracy. In other words, working with those that seek to destroy our democracy is more important to keeping them from actually "destroying our democracy." Huh?
Wanna bet if Alexander Hamilton was alive, he'd be the first in line to challenge Mitch McConnell to a duel? Wanna bet Washington, Adams and even Jefferson would be in line behind him to take on Kevin McCarthy and the rest of the GOP nut jobs? How much longer can our great Republic last with so many convinced that tearing down our democracy is better than accepting the fact Democrats won an election? Talk about sore losers!
The "Faux Patriots" Washington was referring to in 1796 sure seems to be spot on when describing the modern day GOP. Unfortunately, many on the State level still elect these clowns to positions of power. Until this stops, America's future may be doomed. So enjoy this "Memorial Day" and perhaps prepare for future Memorial Days that can only be a time to reminisce about our once proud and thriving democracy, as it too will have fallen at the hands of our enemies - domestic as they may be. Try to have a safe Holiday Weekend.
