A view of Gaza from Yad Mordechai
Okay folks, I know you are already tired of me writing about the current bloodshed in Israel and its defensive measures against Hamas in Gaza. I also know many of you think I am overly bias. Perhaps because I am and will always be. How can anyone side with Hamas when they openly celebrated when the United States was struck on 9/11 or when (again) a bus in Tel Aviv is blown up with over 20 innocents aboard? But the real reason for this posting is to point out the fact that the Republican Party and GOP supported Super-PACS pushed a relentless narrative that Israel had been "thrown under a bus" by President Obama. Anyone recall GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's claim just that in a presidential debate? Many of my Jewish friends honestly believed that narrative and voted solely for Romney because they believed the narrative that Obama has "turned his back on Israel." Every time I challenged them, I was rebuffed as being anything from a "Communist" to being "Un-American!"
Now that the election is over and we have had time to reflect on the election, but we also have first hand evidence that President Obama has NOT abandoned our total and complete support for Israel! Just last night, Israeli President Shimon Peres was interviewed by Wolf Blitzer on CNN. What did we hear from this interview?
Peres made it very clear that the United States has stood strong alongside Israel and will continue to do so.
From the Blitzer CNN interview;" BLITZER:" In a word or two how is the state of U.S./Israeli relations as you and I meet right now?" PRES. SHIMON PERES: "Basically profound and right. (INAUDIBLE) time of elections usually is enjoyed by partisan support. I think we were lucky by having it and enjoying it. It shall remain the same way." BLITZER: "Because his supporters back in Washington say U.S./Israeli military-to-military, intelligence-to-intelligence cooperation is stronger now than it's ever been." Are they right? PERES: Yes. And because (INAUDIBLE) else is becoming our major concern with the new weapons in the Middle East, the new (INAUDIBLE) in the Middle East, we are surrounded by many dangers and many menaces. And security is really the top issue in our existence. And here the president is true to his words. What he pledged, he did. BLITZER: "Would you say the relationship today is as good as it's ever been, not as good, strained, how would you describe it? PERES: "I think generally as good as it could have been, as it should have been. You know, I learn from my boss (INAUDIBLE) that you have to judge a (INAUDIBLE) person in the right way, which is on his record. Not what he says, not what he -- (INAUDIBLE) right, but what did do. When I look at the record of President Obama concerning the major issue security I think it's a highly satisfactory record from Israeli point of view."
"Highly satisfactory!" Hmm, not exactly what the Republicans were selling us just a few weeks ago. Now that this most recent conflict has occurred, Prime Minister Netanyahu has praised President Obama for approving the financial support for the expansion of Israel's Iron Dome Anti-Missile System, which has effectively shot down over 85 % of the missiles fired into Israel from Gaza. Again, are my friends that challenged me a few weeks ago paying attention to this?
What is equally important, is the fact that the Iron Dome System is a significant upgrade to the American Patriot Anti-Missile System, which has proven to be less effective in shooting down incoming missiles. With the success of the Iron Dome, many players in the region will be re-calculating their strategies about attacking Israel, especially Iran and Hezbollah from Lebanon. With additional support from the United States, we can only hope the Israelis continue to perfect their Iron Dome system so that fewer and fewer attacking missiles will have success not only on Israel, but also on any American base or assets located throughout the World. America Stands by Israel. Will the World? If the Arab Spring leads to more attacks on the Non-Muslim World, will we ever see an Arab Fall?
