By now you are really confused why I am bringing this up, but Passover begins tonight and most of my immediate family will be with me for this holiday. In preparation, my house has been turned upside down to cleanse it of the collection of the mundane, everyday foods and dishes. And with this routine, my home becomes "ready for the observance" of an event that took place thousands of years ago.
But should we not begin to consider what steps can be made to cleanse the current tired and worn out political system? I mean, no one is a bigger advocate for the system of government created by the Framers, but it is impossible to not see that we need to "cleanse" ourselves of the politicians that currently act as our leaders. I say "act" like our leaders because it has become obvious that they do not lead according to the needs of the many, but according to the needs of the few in the form of interest groups and their political party's ideologies. Assisting them in their endeavors is their ideologically supporting for-profit media, which constantly manipulates Americans into believing political leaders actually care about how we feel and work to meet our needs. Just last week, the Senate was unable to introduce legislation that would have a minimum of controls on firearms. I say minimum because the proposed bill exempted over 2,700 types of guns from proposed restrictions. According the Senate Majority leader Harry Reid (D-NV), the proposed bill could muster only 40 votes of support, far short of the super-majority of 60 needed in order to overcome the opposition's expected filibuster. Although this might seem to be "par for the course", polling recently conducted revealed that 89% of all Americans agree that some controls need to be enacted, especially criminal and mental background checks! More importantly, 85% of all gun owners and members of the National Rifle Association ("NRA") agree that background checks are necessary, yet the Senate, due to pressure from the NRA, backed off any such proposals for said checks. If there was ever an example that our leaders no longer represent the interests of the majority, this is one. Bowing to the political pressure for self-preservation, our leaders would rather deal with the demands of the Pharaohs of interest groups, rather than the masses demanding for a real leadership.
As President John Adams once wrote: "The Hebrews have done more to civilize men than any other nation. If I were an atheist, and believed blind eternal fate, I should still believe that fate had ordained the Jews to be the most essential instrument for civilizing the nations." As many celebrate the holiday of Passover, perhaps it is time for a new Moses in American politics, one less concerned about the interests of the few, and more interested in the protecting of the many.
Due to my observance of the holiday, I will not be posting until later in the week. See you then and be well.
